My name is Charlotte, sometimes known as Ms Lottie, occasionally as The Slightly Mad Quilt Lady. This is my blog, where you'll find me writing a lot about my quilting and textile arts and a little about my family's life in a small seaside town in New Zealand. Haere mai!

Lockdown Day 3

I'm heading off to work tonight for a 12 hour night shift. I'm a little nervous, but in truth, I have very little to fear. I am working in a 'green' area in the hospital, theoretically we shouldn't have any women with suspected or confirmed Covid-19 through our doors. We have also got lots of plans in place, lots of protocols to keep myself and any patients we have safe. But still.

We've also been doing lots of planning here as a family on how I'm going to keep them safe. Things to do with clothes changing, showering, taking disposable food containers to work etc. Sometimes it seems like overkill and then I read about the death toll in Italy again...

The clear winner in this lockdown is our dog. She loves having us all home, all the time, and is getting exhausted (she's old) with all the walks we've been taking her on just to get out in the fresh air.

Here's a better photo of her (in her favourite state) where you can see how grey she's getting.

I'm wondering what all the pets in NZ think of what's going on. Dogs will be loving it, cats might wonder why they are being constantly disturbed, budgies will be learning new words and goldfish...well, goldfish won't even notice.

What I saw this morning...

My ducks eating their breakfast.  Ducks are rude and loud and obnoxious, then they shut up as soon as their beaks are full....hmmm, sounds like a few people I know.

Wildpuss, pretending to be a tiger.  He's not a fastidious cat and doesn't mind the dew.

Emma saying good morning to Wildpuss and Wildpuss not looking so amused.  Don't worry, WP, I don't like the wet nose either!

Them's thar turkeys on thar hills!

I love this one.  She looks like she's saying, "We are not amused," in her best posh voice.  As in, we are not amused that you are taking pictures BEFORE you feed us.

Such an enthusiastic, dopey dawg.  Being a labrador, trained as a gun dog, Emma feels she has to carry something in her mouth at all times.  Today she's found a bit of wood.  Usually it's a rock, which is bad.  Check out her blunted tooth.  She will drop them when we tell her too, but as soon as our back is turned...

And another pretty sunrise.  Can't help myself, I've a million shots of pretty sunrises.

A little piece of my morning.

This is where I get to walk the dogs.  Here we've reached the top of the hill, so we get a nice long flat bit of road to recover.  It's dry, dry, dry at the moment.  And I've been looking at pictures of snow on blogs on the other side of the world.  Strange.

We have to reach the barn and then we can keep going if we're feeling keen (the dogs are always keen) or we can turn around for home if we're feeling a bit lazy.  I love the rusty stripe - nice focal point.  Can you hear a quilt being designed?

And I'm finding lots of things to practice taking photographs of.  Can you see the fluffy antennae?

5!!

This morning I rushed home from work after a 12 hour night shift so I could say Happy Birthday to my boy and watch him open his presents. I managed to make a few of his gifts but he was thoroughly spoilt with other bought things too.

The crown was fun to make and with velcro on the back, it fits him and his little sister and will still fit him for a while to come yet.
The treasure below was a real hit. He's into pirates, knights and particularly their treasure and he has little stashes of bottle tops, coins, gold trinkety things and anything else shiny scattered around the house. So a little gold spray paint, some driveway rocks and a repurposed blouse sleeve and you have a pirate treasure sack!
I also made him a cape, which only came off (very reluctantly) before bed.

After a few hugs and swordfights (another birthday gift), I helped load the kids in the car for my hubby to take them to daycare. We also loaded in the cake for daycare's afternoon tea (I forgot to take a pic!). And then hubby causually mentioned that maybe I should look at the dog.
Emma is in season and so is confined to the small chook run and only let out for supervised (should that be chaperoned!?) walks. But this morning her baboon bum was kinda scary looking and had something pink poking out of it. In midwifery terms, if she was a woman, I was seeing a good peek of baby's head!
All I wanted to do was jump into my bed and snooze, but no, I had to call the vet. Here is where I should mention that buying a second dog was my HUSBAND'S idea. And he is the one who didn't want to spay her because he might want to breed from her if she turned out to be a good duck dog. Here is where I mention that it has always been ME that takes her to the vet for her shots etc. Grump, grump.
The upshot is I didn't get to bed till late morning and Emma will be spayed after this cycle. She has a prolapsed vag**a and it will keep happening every heat, it can get infected, it's very uncomfortable etc. etc. She is on antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory and yes, it was ME giving her her pills tonight because my husband is away on a fishing trip.
On his new launch.
And yes, there will be a whole post about THAT.

Anyway, Will had a birthday dinner of squid rings at his Grandparent's house and is now peacefully sleeping in bed, tucked up with a few of his favourite presents! Happy Birthday my son.
