My name is Charlotte, sometimes known as Ms Lottie, occasionally as The Slightly Mad Quilt Lady. This is my blog, where you'll find me writing a lot about my quilting and textile arts and a little about my family's life in a small seaside town in New Zealand. Haere mai!

Chimneys and Cornerstones.

The top row is my contribution to this month's Row by Row Round Robin that I am running (slightly haphazardly!) for our guild.  The bottom row is the initial row done by the owner.  And the theme for this month was "Home is where the heart is".

I thought a Chimneys and Cornerstones block suited the theme perfectly.  I also have just finished reading an Elm Creek Quilter's novel "The Quilter's Homecoming" that featured the block.  I chose to use the light background fabric for the cornerstones instead of the usual dark fabrics just for interest.

I was super careful with my seam accuracy (I can often be a bit rough and ready) and it really paid off - my corners all match perfectly (if I do say so myself).

I love the way my block layout almost matches the colours of the Dresden Plates, that was totally unplanned.

There are two other rows already done for this quilt owner - I think I'm safe showing what I have because I don't think she reads my blog but I'm not certain so I won't show the rest (and I haven't asked permission!).  I can't wait for the final reveal of all these quilts, I'm getting really curious about my one!

As you can see from the pictures, the sun came out today but it's still very cold.  New Zealand is experiencing some of the coldest weather ever.  Even Auckland experienced snowfalls, which is a bit crazy.  No snow up here in Northland but bitterly cold southerly winds and a couple of doozy frosts - the leaves might finally fall off my apple trees!

Oh - and if I don't write this down I'll forget it.  My daughter and I were talking about hairstyles and I asked if she would like me to put her doll's hair into a bun.  She then proceeded to tell everyone that her doll had a muffin in her hair!  Awwww.

  1. Ms. Lotti, you know you are my "go-to" lady of the quilts and I can hang my ignorance out there with you....explain this round robin thingy. Do you guys share a stash of fabric at the beginning (so all the quilts basically have the same fabric)or does the fabric get sent on to each person along with the particular quilt they are next working on? Or is it just good management and large stash building that enables you to co-ordinate the fabric. Also is it a complete surprise or are there guidelines? I imagine you would have to specify so many blocks of such-and-such a size.

  3. I have to say its freezing down here! I am limited by an injury too which the cold has made worse. Hopefully it will clear up soon as I really wanted to get into a quilt again. That round robin thing looks great as motivation. We have a challenge coming up for our group which looks interesting too. Was going to talk more about it in the weekend gathering but only one person turned up - me! (well it was snowing already and I didn't hang round long or risk not getting back home :)

Well I have to correct you about no snow in Northland, as on Monday we had snow flurries and yesterday Dargaville had snow. But there would be no snow men.
