A bucketful of cute.

I grabbed the closest thing to put my latest chicks in today when I cleaned out their brooder (aka fishbin, nothing flash around here, folks). For the first few days they are hanging out in my laundry, which doubles as a bathroom, a toolshed, a potting bench, and a pumpkin storage facility.

I have three Light Sussex chicks.

Two Plymouth Barred Rocks.

Three Barnevelders.

Two Silver Laced Wyandottes.

Three Rhode Islands Reds.

And one funny, fuzzy wee Lavender Araucana.

  1. They are adorable!! I have my chicks coming in the mail on May 3 or 4. I have never heard of the Barnevelder breed. Are they nice layer?

  4. Isn't it funny how folks take to baby chicks. The grandchildren love them, but are a little afraid of them, too, so they put them on my belly and I cover them with my shirt, and we all watch them stretch out and sleep(on my belly)Now that is comical. The things we do for our grandchildren.

  5. Chicks are delightful when they sleep - they just flop down on their faces and doze straight off.

Kelly - Barnevelder's are a dutch breed. They are dark brown with black lacing, sometimes double laced on their feathers. They are hardy, calm and a heavy breed so they are not as prolific as many of the light breeds buy still good layers. And they lay lovely dark brown speckled eggs. We can't get Maran's in NZ who lay really dark brown eggs, so these are the brownest we can get.
